Mayor Glover: City to employ 200+ this summer

The City of Shreveport will employ more than 200 youth and young adults between ages 16 and 21 via its summer jobs program.

Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover announced on Thursday details of the program, which includes interships designed for college students who will be placed in various city departments.

Participants will work at a variety of public and private organizations and perform tasks ranging from clerical aides, recreation aides, accounting clerks to library aides, tutors and maintenance assistants.

Caddo Sheriff, SPD to join national Drug Take Back Day

Bringing attention to an increase of pharmaceutical drug abuse and theft, the Caddo Sheriff's Office and the Shreveport Police Department will join a national effort to get the public get rid of unwanted prescription drugs.

The one-day effort, part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, takes place this Saturday at Sheriff's Safety Town at 8910 Jewella Ave. at the west end of the Summer Grove parking lot.

State debate title pending Byrd vs. Caddo Magnet matchup

Two Shreveport high schools are facing off Saturday morning to determine which school gets to claim the title of the best debate team in Louisiana.

C.E. Byrd High School will host the matchup between its own debate team and a visiting team from Caddo Magnet High School, according to Caddo Magnet debate coach Neill Normand.

Goodwill Industries to host job fair to fill 80 positions

Goodwill Industries of North Louisiana has 80 jobs to fill for a local employer and will hold a job fair in search of applicants.

Goodwill's job fair will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, and Thursday, April 11, at the 70th Street Job Center at 800 West 70th Street, Shreveport.

Holiday in Dixie to host first BBQ cook-off

The Holiday in Dixie Ambassadors Club will host the inaugural Holiday in Dixie BBQ Cook-Off from 3 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 in the riverfront area of Festival Plaza in downtown Shreveport.

Admission is $10 and includes three BBQ sample tickets. Additional sample tickets may be purchased for $1. Proceeds raised at the event will benefit the Holiday in Dixie Senior Essay Scholarship for Caddo and Bossier Parish students.
